Why I Decided to Start a Homestead Before COVID
The impending failure of the food chain
Before COVID ever showed up, the food chain had problems. The problems started decades ago when the US government decided to take control of the food chain for safety, economic, and health reasons. Up until that point, most Americans lived in small towns and bought food from local suppliers. The problem was that there was food injustice happening with the poorest Americans in rural America. Starting with Eisenhower’s New Deal and spurred on by two World Wars, programs and deals were structured with a goal to feed America. What started as a goal to feed America has taken a slow march into becoming part of a $1 trillion industry that makes up over 5% of the gross national product (GDP).
My Education on America’s Food Chain
My journey to “woke” was born from a health challenge that caught me by surprise. In 2010, I was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder that landed me in the hospital. While I made a full and complete recovery, it triggered me to investigate why my immune system decided to rebel against me. As I started to educate myself, it became apparent that my diet was most likely one of the major contributors to my immune system going berserk. Up until that point, I was an otherwise “healthy” adult who visited my doctor for annual check-ups.
