My Epiphany: It’s Not a Meritocracy
Embracing Authenticity and Redefining Success on Your Own Terms
“Work hard and do your best.” That was what I was told. So, when I entered the adult world and began working, I believed that all I needed to do was keep my head down and work. Fix problems. Do as I was told. Make it happen.
Except one day, I looked around and realized that the people around me were approaching things differently. It wasn’t about what actually happened. It was more about who was able to sell themselves. It was more like, “Tell a good story and make it look good.”
Fast-forward a few decades, and I am certain that most work environments are not a meritocracy. It is not the “best and brightest” who get ahead; it is more like “the shining lights” who get ahead. I may be wrong.
But look around at what is going on. Do you see the “best and brightest” moving to the top with ease? I guess it would depend on how you classify the best and brightest:
- Don’t rock the boat — agree with the status quo.
- Be friends with the “right” people.
- Weave a narrative that makes YOU look good.
- Help others ONLY when it benefits you.
