In today’s fast-paced world, we’re constantly being bombarded by stressors all around us: our jobs, deadlines at school or home projects, people who need our attention, and more. And while some stress can be good for us (it can give us energy!), too much stress can cause anxiety and even physical illness.

At the source of this anxiety is the feeling that our lives are out of control. Or the situation before us is out of control. Either way, this out-of-control feeling causes physiological responses that are mostly involuntary—our breathing quickens—our pulse rate rises. Our stomach gets tied into knots. Muscles tense.

Most people are unaware all of this is occurring. That is until a rush of emotions begins sweeping over you. Anger. Sadness. Fear. In fact, most people have a general default feeling for their stressed state. Once the emotion takes over, the situation begins to dictate what you say, do, and think. And…
