Bravo! I ask people, both men and women, if they have children. It is simply am attempt to get to know who you are — never am attempt to shame you. If they say, “I don’t have any children, ” I move the conversation along unless they choose to disclose further information. Frankly, it is none of my business.

I second your statement that there are many mothers out there who should not call themselves “mother.” My husband and I did foster care for about 8 years. I can testify to the fact that birthing a child does not by itself make you a better person. No. For the children’s sake, I wish that was true.
